Its all a money mission. I will give it a listen but will not give a nickel to the cause. Jerry would not be a part of this.( hey! lets go see Obama on our dayoff. What B.S.!) Al Gore (the bore, moron) at a show. Dont preach to me. I am a free thinker, dont let the libs win!
A year from now this country will be in real bad shape.
Our grand kids will pay for this madnessin the long run.

Jerry went and met Gore, you don't think he'd do the same for Obama? Give me a break. He may have been apathetic and not have voted but I guarantee you he was more of a LIB than one of you.

True.

The one thing Gore liked about Jerry at that point of his career was that Jerry was single-handedly absorbing more Carbon that the entire DC area, though, unfortunately, he also was prone to gas...overall Al was hoping to use him as a Carbon sink, but it never worked out.

I would be surprised if the money was the main purpose behind the reunion. Though they may be some form of propaganda, the videos on dead.net of the rehearsals clearly show the boys have a LOT OF FUN playing the music and they are all pumped about THE MUSIC.

And if the money wasn't rolling in for the Grateful Dead, then they wouldn't have toured either. If you've got something to offer that people want to pay money for, why not capitalize?

The music sounds good from the AUDs and the experiences posted by attendees are mostly positive. Sounds like this tour will be a fun time.

I'm excited for Rothbury.

No doubt that it is, and I ain't going - but I just get sick of people who bring their politics to every thread they post on. Last night sounds suprisingly good, though. Much better than Sunday, imho.

totally understood!!! sorry, I needed a short one-liner to blow the steam off after seeing the incongruous "I am a free thinker, dont let the libs win!"

kind of naive to think that "politicos" wouldn't be out in force in dc...

ENJOY the music!!!

remember what Jerry said about creating music being like climbing the inside walls of an infinite cylinder...well for me, last night was the creative-living-in-the-moment experience that only jam-bands, live music, and a few deep hits can bring.
Playing the same songs for 44 years and still making a joyful noise is amazing!!!! you go boys!!!

I think anyone who can go meet a president on a day off should go for it. What else could you do that is going to top that. Maybe space travel?

This is a Grateful Dead Forum, fair chance anything about music here will be seen somehow in light of or in comparison to the Grateful Dead and their music.

Call your self 'The Dead', play Grateful Dead songs, heck have several former members of the Grateful dead in your band and you know what...they will be seen somehow in light of or in comparison to the Grateful Dead and their music.

Where did all these needy people come from? The ones that need others to validate their enjoyment of 'The Dead'?? Why should any of you care if others don't get on board with you?? HAVE A BLAST! ENJOY YOURSEVES!! :) :)

If comparisons or criticisms bother you maybe this isn't the best place for you to hang, maybe post at Phil & Friends or something. Of course over there you might get told 'The Dead' couldn't keep up with P&F ;)

Right on, OUJ...

I'm amazed by--as you correctly put it--the NEEDINESS expressed by these 'Dead' attendees...as if w/out a constant drumbeat of reinforcement that they are not wasting their money on this tour, they'll somehow be forced to face the truth--that they're trying to capture something beyond their grasp...."never could reach it just slips away when I try...."

Sounds nice enough (Verizon Ctr show), and I like that people who went said it was great.

But just as you don't want us old farts (and I'm guessing most folks who are welcoming the tour are understandably jonesing for perhaps their first and/or only taste of what they imagine the real thing was like) you need to cut US some slack for being skeptical.

and here's why:

If you were a huge fan of The Who..would you pay big bucks to see them on tour without Pete Townshend?

If you loved the Rolling Stones more than any other band, would you pay huge money to see them on tour without Mick Jagger?

How about Pink Floyd without David Gilmore, or Led Zep without Jimmy Paige?

You get what I'm saying here?

Warren Hayes is a terrific guitarist. Bobby, Phil, Mickey and Billy can still jam even if they can't really sing...but for those of us who felt in their hearts and souls that Jerry Garcia WAS the heart and soul of the Grateful Dead, the idea of getting all pumped up for a tour without him and paying enormous bucks to see Tipper Gore on percussion on Sugar Magnolia (please, this is NOT a political rant, but that's a SERIOUS turn off)....we cannot take this seriously.

Go if you want. Have fun. Party with your buds. Live music is a great thing.

But don't come down on the rest of us who would rather kick back and crank up 6/9/77 for what the band REALLY was than pretend we're seeing anything close to that with this tour.

(and BTW, I just listened to the "Passenger" everyone was raving about...I've heard DSO do it just as well if not better. Just saying.)

Great. Then don't go. More room for me. If you don't care about the band w/o Jerry, then why do you constantly post about how you're not going? Honestly, nobody cares if you like it or not, and no one cares if you go or not.

Sorry, but that's the absolute truth. Go listen to 6/9/77. I've heard the show many times and it's a good show. Hell, go see DSO, I'm sure they'll play it in front of you note for note. I'm going to see some music that's never been played before when they come to my town.

......and you won't be there. :)

You know its funny. Back in the 70's and 80's it was fun to go to shows.
Travel,meet new people,party,music,laugh,and have fun.
It did not matter what or who you were.
I guess us old farts had what others will never understand.
I guess we were blessed.

"If you don't care about the band w/o Jerry, then why do you constantly post about how you're not going?"

Because that was the topic of the thread...go back and see for yourself. And if you;re allowed your opinion on this shell of a band, why should I not be afforded mine?

This is a FORUM...it's where people express opinions. If you can't handle people disagreeing with yours, maybe you're the one who should be going elsewhere, to a happy land where everyone agrees with what you say and thinks seeing 'The Dead' is just like seeing THE Grateful Dead.

have fun at the shows...i'm sure you'll have plenty of room.

How the hell would you ever know what Jerry would do if he were still alive? I am so bleeping tired of deadheads thinking that they "know" what Jerry would do, what he would think or that he must be turning over in his grave.

No one knows what Jerry would do for sure but I'd bet good money he would be smoking Persian. That was his favorite hobby, not music.

Rock Stars seem to like meeting Presidents. It's all showbiz. Even George Harrison went to see Gerald Ford. Although for some reason Nixon never invited Lennon to the Oval Office. They did let a drugaddled Elvis in tho.
